Definition: A noun is a ‘naming word’. The names of things, persons, places, feelings are all classified under Noun.

Kinds of noun

There are five types of Nouns in English grammar.

  1. Common Noun
  2. Proper Noun
  3. Collective Noun
  4. Abstract Noun
  5. Material Noun

Noun for kids

Raghav an honest man leads the army with honesty.

In the above sentence, Raghav is a Proper Noun Man is a Common Noun army is a Collective Noun honesty is an Abstract noun.

Common noun

Definition:  In a simple way, a Common noun refers to the name common to all persons or things of the same kind, e.g. boy, girl, city, book, etc. Common nouns are so common it is generally referred to as a name and describe a class of person things animals etc. like we call a boy it stand for the whole community of boys it may be Ram, Shyam, John or any other boy. as we call river so will show the whole rivers so it is a common word for all rivers like Ganga, Amazon, Nile, etc.

Note: Abstract nouns can be formed from adjectives, verbs and common nouns by adding a ‘suffix’ to them.
