Kargil is situated 240 kilometres eastwards from Sri Nagar. The total population of this area is 81000. It is spread over an area of 14036 square kilometres and is 110000 feet above the sea level. Therefore, it is covered with ice for 8-9 months of the year. In Dras, the temperature goes down to -50° to 55°C.

In Indian history, Kargil will be remembered for the 1999 tragedy. Actually 2000 terrorists illegally occupied the Kargil and developed the temporary forts at important areas. Indian army came to know all this in May 1999. To remove these terrorists. Indian army started ‘Operation Flush Out’ after which air force followed with the ‘Operation Vijay’. Air force destroyed the important coverings of the terrorists with bombarding. They took three months to finish the operation. In this 500 soldiers died and the government spends much more than the previous war with Pakistan.

India always supports peace and harmony in the world. This should not be considered our weakness.
