 Vowels and Consonants for Class 3

An alphabet is a set of letters or symbols that helps to make phrases, words, or sentences.

In the English language, there are 26 alphabets (a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h,  i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z, ) out of which 5 are known as vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and rest are consonants (b, c, d, f, g, h, j………and so on).

Vowels

A vowel is a speaking sound made when the mouth is open and the tongue is not in touch with the teeth, the apex of the mouth, or other oral structures. This allows for unrestricted air float. A vowel is a sound that is produced by blowing air out of the mouth rather than by closing it or grinding your teeth. It sounds louder than the word. As we can see differences between the sound of vowels and the sound of consonants.

The English vowel pronounced sounds are written in letters in alphabet order. All English phrases have vowel letters (A, E, I, O, U).

Types of vowels sounds

1. Long vowels sound

A long vowel sounds as long and pronounced as the alphabet. For example, a ‘long A‘ sounds pronounced the letter long “A“. “E” letter is pronounced “long E“.

When two vowels show up following each other in a word, the phrase or a word normally makes a long pronounced sound of the first vowel. The phrases like ‘need‘ makes the long E sound and the phrase ‘tail‘ makes the long A sound.

2. Short vowels sound

Consonants

In the English language, there are 26 letters in the alphabet other than five vowels(a, e, i, o, u) remaining letters are called consonants.

A consonant is a sound that is pronounced by using sound by blocking air from flowing out of the mouth with the teeth, tongue, lips, or palate. Consonants may additionally come on their own or in clusters however have to be related to a vowel to structure a syllable (b, c, d, f, g,h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z).

Consonants examples:
