Verbs For Class 4

Definition: A verb is a word that showcases the occurrence of a particular task or conveys a state of being.

We will understand verbs with the help of an example:-

  • Ms.Sharma is teaching the class in the morning.

What does Ms.Sharma do in the morning? She teaches the class in the morning. The action that she is doing is teaching the class. So, the action that is denoted to her is “teaching”. Hence, the verb that is here is “teaching”.

Let us understand another example:-

  • Suman writes a letter to her aunt who is living in the US.

The verb that is used here is “writes”. Because it is denoting an action.

Similarly, we will look at a few more examples:

  1. Swara is dancing at the party.
  2. Kids are playing in the park.
  3. Mother is cooking in the kitchen.
  4. Sahil is writing notes.
  5. Disha is studying physics.

We can see the action words in the above sentences are: dancing, playing, cooking, writing, and studying.

Types Of Verbs For Class 4

There are various types of verbs which are as follows:-

  1. Transitive verbs
  2. Intransitive Verbs
  3. Auxiliary verbs
  4. Modals verbs

1. Transitive verbs

A kind of verb that needs an object to follow the verb through is called a transitive verb.

Examples: 

  1. The teacher was teaching science today. (the object is “maths”)
  2. Sweetie is watering the plants. (the object is “plants”)
  3. I am writing my notes with a pen. (the object is “pen”)
  4. He is playing video games on television. (the object is “television”)
  5. She was singing a song at the concert. (the object is “concert”)
  6. Mahak is listening to songs. (the object is “songs”)
  7. Pallavi cooks tasty food. (the object is “food”)
  8. Ram will be having dinner with his friends. (the object is “dinner”)
  9. We are going to a village to spend the vacation. (the object is “concert”)
  10. The dog barks at night. (the object is “night”)

2. Intransitive Verbs

Unlike a transitive verb, an Intransitive verb does not take an object.

Examples: 

  1. I wake up at 5 am.
  2. We were laughing together.
  3. She was walking.
  4. He is reading.
  5. She laughed loudly.
  6. Children sang songs.
  7. Riya arrived late at night.
  8. The baby is sleeping.
  9. Girls are dancing.
  10. Pranav is an intelligent boy.

3. Auxiliary Verbs

An Auxiliary verb is a verb that helps to show a mood or tense. It is used as a helping verb that supports the main verb in a sentence.

Examples: 

  1. She has been cooking since morning.
  2. He was studying the whole night.
  3. They were playing in the park.
  4. We will be going to the party.
  5. These students are done with their examinations.
  6. Shreya will go for shopping today.
  7. May you never meet John’s father.
  8. She was happy to find her lost toy.
  9. Mira has been school it for not completing the project.
  10. What are you doing since last two hours?

4. Modals Verbs

The verbs such as; Shall, should, will, would, might, can, could, must, ought, dare, etc. show the necessity, intent, ability, or possibility. So, they are known as called modal verbs.

Examples: 

  1. You shall enter the class now.
  2. She will not miss the opportunity.
  3. She can go to the office.
  4. He ought to follow the rules.
  5. She could join the meeting.
  6. He might come today in the evening.
  7. They must complete the project.
  8. Rahul may forget to buy stationery.
  9. Sia should complete her work before playing.
  10. Teena can run quickly.
