Prepositions for Class 3

Definition: A word that tells us where something or somebody is, or where something happens is called a preposition. Moreover, it shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other words in a sentence.

Examples:

1. I am at my home now.
2. You are in school.
3. He jumped into the pool.
4. We are standing with you.
5. My mobile is on the table.

 In this, the preposition can be used as ‘preposition of time’, ‘preposition of position’, or ‘preposition of direction’ in different sentences and conveys different meanings.

Types of Preposition

There are 3 types of prepositions:

1. Preposition of time 
2. Preposition of position
3. Preposition of direction

1. Preposition of Time

This word is used to show how a noun or pronoun in a sentence is related to other words in the sentence in terms of “time.” Its position is immediately before the adverb of time (also known as ‘time phrase’) in a sentence. These include, on, in, for, since, from, before, after, then, etc.

Examples:

1. It is cold at night.
2. Our annual day is on 18 of July.
3. We talked in the evening. 
4. I’ve been working here for six months now.
5. I will see you in the evening.

A noun or pronoun’s relationship to other words in a sentence in terms of “position” is indicated by the preposition of position. 

Examples:

1. On the bulletin boards, the notification was posted. 
2. Your ball is under the table.
3. Located between the two chairs is a little table.
4. She sat beside him during dinner.
5. The girl was sitting among her friends.

2. Preposition of Position

 This word is used to show how a noun or pronoun in a sentence is related to other words in the sentence in terms of “Preposition”. This tells us the position of someone or something. These include: at, in, on, between, among,  above, under, below, etc.

Examples:

1. The red ball is beside the car.
2. The football is between the red boxes.
3. These books are on the table.
4. We should distribute it among people.
5. My bag is under the bed.

3. Preposition of Direction

It is used to indicate the relation of a noun or a pronoun with some other words in a sentence in terms of its moment or direction. These include from, to, by, into, off, up, etc

Examples:

1. They go to Chennai by train.
2. He goes up the hill.
3. She quietly walked into the room.
4. Meena swam across the lake.
