Adjective Definition and Meaning for Class 3 

A word that tells more about or adds details to the meaning of a noun or a pronoun is known as an adjective.

Examples:

  • She swims fast.
  • Our house is very big.
  • An apple is red.

Kinds of Adjectives

  1. Adjective of quality.
  2. Adjective of quantity.
  3. Adjective of number.

1. Adjective of Quality

An adjective that describes the color, shape, manner, size, quality, etc of a noun or a pronoun is known as an Adjective of Quality.

Examples:   

  • An elephant is fat.
  • Sara is a beautiful girl.
  • New Delhi is a big city.

2. Adjective of Quantity

An adjective that tells us How much of a thing is meant is known as an Adjective of Quantity.

Examples:

  • I took some notebooks.
  • Sam has little interest in drawing.
  • I don’t have much time.

3. Adjective of Number

An adjective that tells us “how many persons or things are meant is known as an Adjective of a Number.

  • One, two, three, four……etc, are known as cardinal numbers.
  • First, second, third, fourth ……. etc, are known as ordinal numbers.

Examples:

  • The basket contains seven mangoes.
  • Today is the first day of the month.
  • All the board members were present.

Interrogative adjective: it is used to ask questions related to nouns or pronouns.

Examples:

  • Which shop offers the highest discount?
  • What information are you trying to get?

Degree of Comparison

Most of the adjectives have three degrees of comparison.

  1. Positive Degree of Comparision
  2. Comparative Degree of Comparision
  3. Superlative Degree of Comparision

1. Positive Degree of Comparison

when no comparison is done and the adjective is in its simple form, is said to be of a positive degree.

Examples:

  • Geeta is a tall girl.
  • Nirbhay is a brave boy.

2. Comparative Degree of Comparison

when two things are compared in more or fewer degrees of the same quality, it is said to be in the comparative degree.

Examples:

  • Geeta is taller than Reema and Shreya.
  • Vikas is braver than Nikhil.

3. Superlative Degree of Comparison

when more than two things are compared to show the highest or the lowest degree of the same quality, it is said to be in the superlative degree.

Examples:

  • Himani is the tallest in our group.
  • Vikrant is the bravest of all the boys.

Usually, comparative and superlative are formed by adding -er and -est to the positive.
