What are modals for class 4?

Modals are the words that describe the mode or manner of the action denoted by the verb.

They are always used with the principal verb that follows them. They express meanings or ideas such as permission, possibility, certainty, necessity, obligation, command, request, compulsion, ability, capacity, polite request, etc.

How many Modals are there?

There are 14 main modals which we can say modal auxiliary verbs, we can also say helping verbs. They cannot be use alone.

14 main Modals are:-

Can, Could, Will, Would, Shall, Should, May, Might, Must, Ought to, Used to, Have to, need to , dare, etc.

Usage of Modals for class 4

Use of ‘Can’ for class 4 

  • denotes power, capacity, and ability.
  • Used for taking and giving permission.
  • Shows friendly request.

10 Examples of ‘Can’ for class 4 

  1. Daisy can lift 40 kg weight.
  2. You can go now. (Giving Permission)
  3. She can run very fast.
  4. Can I use this pen? (Friendly Request)
  5. My brother can ride bike.
  6. My mother can speak German.
  7. I cannot go alone.
  8. She can write 3 posts daily.
  9. Can you come with me? (Friendly Request)
  10. Sohan can write in Spanish.

Use of ‘Could’ for class 4 

  • denotes the past ability, capacity and power.
  • to show remote possibility.
  • shows formal request.

10 Examples of ‘Could’ for class 4 

    1. Daisy could lift 40 kg weight when she was fourteen.
    2. I could write 10 pages daily when I was three.
    3. She could run very fast when she was four.
    4. There could be a bomb in your house. (remote possibility)
    5. My dog could catch the ball when it was three.
    6. My brother could ride bike when he was sixteen.
    7. She could not come yesterday. (Past ability)
    8. She could do her help, but she didn’t.
    9. Could you help me? (formal request)
    10. There could be a dog in the street. (remote possibility)

Use of ‘Shall’ for class 4 

  1. To express a pure future with first-person (I, we), for example :–
    1. shall help you.
    2. We shall meet you on Sunday.
  2. Taking and giving permission. For example:-
    1. Shall I help you?
    2. Shall we meet you on Sunday?

Examples of ‘Shall’ for class 4 

  1. I shall be waiting for you.
  2. We shall meet you in the park.
  3. We shall be punished for this blunder.
  4. I shall have reward for this achievement.
  5. Shall we go now? (Taking permission)

Use of ‘Should’ for class 4 

  • It is past form of Shall.
  • Express duty, suggestion, and advice.

10 Examples of ‘Should’ for class 4 

    1. You should come on time in the class.
    2. He should join the competition.
    3. You should take care of your things.
    4. You should brush your teeth twice a day.
    5. He should do his homework on time.
    6. You should run fast to catch the bus.
    7. You should go home now.
    8. She should study hard.
    9. Should I go there?
    10. He should not laugh at his mistake.

Use of ‘Will’

  • is used with the second person (you), and third person (He, She, It, Singular) in future tense.

10 Examples of ‘Will’ for class 4 

  1. She will go to Mumbai.
  2. They will not go to America next week.
  3. He will take care of this luggage.
  4. They will do this job dedicatedly.
  5. She will wear a pink dress to the Party.
  6. They will be waiting for you.
  7. I will help you. (Promise).
  8. I will make you laugh definitely. (determination)
  9. My mother will make mango shake.
  10. She will draw very well.

Use of ‘Would’

  • to express past habit.
  • Shows choice and preference

  1. She would go to school by bus.
  2. What would you like to take?
  3. Would you come with me?
  4. He hoped that she would come.
  5. Would you like to take some hot or cold?
  6. I would return on foot.
  7. She would not feel better.

  9. I would go for a movie.
  10. He thought that he would be pass.

Use of ‘Ought to’

  • moral obligation and duty

Examples of ‘Ought to’ for class 4 

  1. You ought to obey your parents.
  2. We ought to love our country.
  3. He ought to stop smoking.
  4. You ought to tell the truth.
  5. She ought to consult doctor about this.

Use of ‘Need to’

  • expresses requirements

Examples of Need to for class 4 

  1. She needs to drink 8 glasses of water daily.
  2. He need to take rest for an hour .
  3. They need basic amenities in the school.
  4. They need not come here.
  5. He needs to go there.
  6. I need to help him.

Use of ‘May’

  • Shows possibility
  • Expresses willingness in an optative sentence.
  • Shows respect and request.
  • taking and giving permission.
  • possibly and likely is never used with ‘may’.

Examples of ‘May’

  1. It may rain today.  (50% chance)
  2. May I go to drink water? (Request)
  3. You may go now. (Taking permission)
  4. He may play cards. (Possibility)
  5. She may like this dress. (Possibility)

Use of ‘Might’

  • Shows less possibility

Examples of Might for class 4 

  1. It might rain today. (25% chance)
  2. She might  come.
  3. They might dance at the party.
  4. He might pass the exam.
  5. He might go there.

Use of ‘Must’

  • Shows greater possibility

Examples of ‘Must’ for class 4 

  1. It must be raining today. (90% chances)
  2. He must  pass this exam.
  3. You must take care of your parents.
  4. He must go there to see him.
  5. She comes in a luxurious car, she must be rich.

Use of ‘dare’

  • express challenge or courage

Examples of ‘dare’ for class 4 

  1. She does not dare to go there.
  2. How dare he say that.
  3. You dare to come here.
  4. How dare you to touch my diary.
  5. He does not dare to go at the party.

Use of ‘Used to’

  • Denotes past habits and situation.

Examples of ‘Used to’ for class 4 

  1. I used to go to temple with my grandmother.
  2. I used to play football with my brother.
  3. She used to come here every Sunday.
  4. They used to drink together.
  5. He used to call me every day.
