Kerala is a state which is well known for its festival Onam. Onam is the festival of harvest. It is celebrated by the Malayalee people full of joy and happiness. They celebrated this festival to welcome their Lord Mahabali king. Kerala people believed that their Mahabali king would come during this festival and spread lots of happiness and joy among people. Every year Onam comes in August or September. This festival is a ten-day-long festival. This is celebrated with many traditional activities like rangoli decorations, Elephant parades, Malayalee songs, Dances like Kathakali, Kaikatti kali, Kummatti kali, and many other competitions like boat races performed by the people. Delicious food cooked which is served on banana leaves. Onam is a festival of unity. During this festival, Keralites forget all their caste, religion, and color and they celebrate this festival together full of zeal and joy.

Onam is a famous festival in Kerala. It is an important festival for Malayalee communities. Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala. This festival is celebrated to welcome the lord of the Kerala community king Mahabali. Because Malayalee communities believed that their lord king mahabali visits Kerala during Onam and offers blessings to them. It is called the festival of flowers.  

Onam starts off every year with a parade called athachamayam. The parade features Elephant marching, music, a boat race, drum beats, colorfully dressed people, and rangoli decoration. Pookallam is a type of rangoli made with petals of flowers. The Thrikkakara temple in Kerala is beautifully decorated by the people on the eve of Onam. All the dancers wear attractive costumes for their performances.  

Onam is one of the joyous festivals for the people of Kerala. People decorated their houses with flowers and they decorated their doorsteps with rangoli to welcome their lord Mahabali. During Onam people clear their boundaries of caste, and religious partialities and celebrate this festival in unity.

Introduction  

India has a bunch of so many festivals and Onam is one of them. It is one of the most famous festivals in Kerala. This festival is celebrated in the month of gingham as per the Malayalam calendar. according to modern calendars, it is celebrated in the month of August or September. This festival is celebrated by all communities of Kerala together.  

On this day people of Kerala forget all their caste, religion, and color and celebrate this festival together in unity. The whole of Kerala enjoys this festival with great fun and enthusiasm. 

Why this Festival is Celebrated  

This festival is celebrated by the communities of Kerala to welcome King Mahabali. King Mahabali is the Lord of Kerala’s people. They believe that King Mahabali comes on this day and gives blessings to the people of Kerala. They decorate their doorsteps with flowers to welcome the king. They clean their whole house full of fragrances so that king Mahabali gives them lots of blessings in joyous form. 

Onam is a harvest festival as this festival falls in the months of August end and beginning of September every year. This festival is celebrated to honor the Vanana- An Avatar of Vishnu. 

How Onam is Celebrated in Kerala 

Onam is a ten days long festival that consists of various activities and sports performed by the people of Kerala. Numerous kinds of dance songs, games, and worship are conducted with lots of joy and happiness. 

Games like boat races are played and the winner will get prizes too. People decorate their doorsteps with rangoli and place beautiful flower kits on the entry to welcome their Mahabali King. This festival is celebrated for ten days continuously. The first and last day of Onam is very important. People cooked delicious food on the first day in welcome of Onam and they played lots of games, songs, and competitions to sum up this festival.  

Other activities in Kerala during Onam 

Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala. The celebration generally includes Onam sadhya, Onam Vallam, Onam pookalam, and much more. Onam Sadhya consists of the preparation of different kinds of lavish vegetation dishes that are served on banana leaves. Brown is an important delicacy of Onam Sadhya and is prepared in bulk to be distributed among the people.  

Onam Vallam suggests boat races where people gather in bulk to compete with each other. They use snake-shaped boats and sing songs at loud volumes While competing. 

Also, many types of traditional dances are performed during the festival including Kathakali, Kaikatti kali, Kummatti kali, and much more. They also perform Pulikali, Pookkalam, Onathappan, Thumbi Thullal, and other activities during the ten days of the Onam festival for celebrations.
