Subject and predicate for class 6 CBSE

Class 6 English Grammar CBSE Chapter 2:  Subject and Predicate is nothing but Parts of the Sentence. We know very well that a simple sentence has two main parts — Subject and Predicate. 

What is Subject in English grammar?

We know that in a sentence there are two main parts namely Subject and Predicate 

The first part of the sentence  is one who tells what and who is performing an action and tells us who and what the sentence is talking about. It may be a name, pronoun, or thing.

Subject and Predicate Example for class 6

Sanem cooks Food. (Sanem is the Subject, who does an action (cooking).

He is running. (He is the subject, who does an action (running).

What is Predicate in English Grammar?

Predicate is the second part of the sentence. The Predicate of the sentence consists of a number of words that express the action done by the Subject or tells us what the subject does or is. Predicates include the Verb, Principal, Auxiliary verb.

For Example:

He is cooking food. (is cooking food is predicate, express the action done by the Subject (he)

Raven does his job perfectly. (does his job perfectly is predicate, express the action done by the Subject (Raven). 

Note:

Meaning of Verb: A word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence, and forming the main part of the predicate of a sentence.

Meaning of Auxiliary verb: a verb used in forming the tenses, modals, and voices of other verbs. It is of two types Primary Auxiliary verbs and Modal auxiliary verbs and The primary auxiliary verbs in English grammar are be(is, am, are, was, were), do(do, does, did), and have(has, have, had); the modal auxiliary verbs are can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would.

Meaning of Principal Verb: Principal verb or the main verb is also known as lexical verb. Main verbs can stand alone, or they can be used with a helping verb, also called an auxiliary verb.
