Punctuation For Class 4

Definition of Punctuation: Punctuation is the set of marks used to regulate the correct text and clarify the exact meaning by linking words, clauses, and phrases.

Examples of some random punctuated sentences are given below :

  1. If you find an easy way, you should try that.
  2. If I come here, I will text you.
  3. I ran fast so that I might board the bus.
  4. She tried so that she might win this competition.
  5. I purchased a house so that I might live here.

Types of Punctuation marks

There are various types of punctuation marks which are as follows:-

1. Full Stop (.)

It is a Punctuation mark used to mark the end of the sentence.

Examples:-

  1. He is a good boy.
  2. Myra bought a book yesterday.
  3. She has beautiful earing.
  4. They are playing in the garden.
  5. The kid is crying.

2. Commas (,)

Commas are used to separate three or more words or phrases in a sentence. It also gives us a pause that is required in a sentence.

Examples:-

  1. If you try this, you will feel good soon.
  2. If I do this daily, I will become perfect at this.
  3. If you come here on time, you will become punctual.
  4. Unfortunately, I was late for the meeting today.
  5. If I try my best, I will achieve the target soon.

3. Question mark (?)

A question mark is used at the end of a sentence, where the sentence is investigating something or asking a direct question.

Examples:-

  1. Why did you tell him the truth?
  2. When did Ravi come back to his village?
  3. How did you generate such a massive profit for your business?
  4. Where do you want to spend your entire life after marriage?
  5. What is the main reason behind this senseless argument?

4. Exclamation mark (!)

The punctuation mark that is used to denote strong feelings and emotions is called an exclamatory mark.

Examples:-

  1. What a beautiful dress!
  2. How sweet of you!
  3. What a great plan!
  4. Wow! this is a wonderful car.
  5. Great! You won the match.

5. Semicolons (;)

A semicolon is basically used to separate phrases or clauses which are related and that seem equally emphasized.

Examples:-

  1. The Hospital was fully crowded with patients; however, Sandeep was admitted.
  2. I travelled to Delhi; Ravi travelled to Mumbai.
  3. I drive Car to reach my office; Rahul rides the bike to reach his office.
  4. Ram spent two hours on searching book; however, he could not find his book.
  5. She prepared for exams; however, she could not pass her exams.

6. Apostrophe (‘)

An apostrophe is used to show possession of a singular noun or to show contraction of words created by omission of letters.

Examples:-

  1. Who doesn’t like his drama?
  2. He didn’t think I noticed him.
  3. I can’t describe him anymore.
  4. She doesn’t drive to work.
  5. Shri assured me that he won’t repeat the same mistake again.

Furthermore, it is also important to use Capital letters at the beginning of the sentence.
