Phrases
A phrase is a one or group of word clauses that have a sense of meaning but do not contain a subject or verb in a sentence. The phrase does not complete a sentence itself.
Best friend, slowly, intelligent, is working, under, before are words to describe or act as phrases in a sentence.
Examples:-
- He is a bright student.
- Nice to meet you.
- Read carefully the book.
- They are going for a picnic.
- Emily will meet Tara as soon as possible.
- They left for the train in the morning.
- She is a very smart girl.
- She wears a beautiful red color dress.
- They might complete the work on time.
- They all smiled.
Kinds of phrases
There are different kinds of phrases:-
- Noun phrase
- Adjective phrase
- Adverb phrase
- Prepositional phrase
- Verb phrase
1. Noun phrase
A noun phrase is a group of words that expresses or act as a noun or function as a noun in a sentence.
The teacher, An animal, an old lady, and red color are some words that describe or act as noun phrases.
Examples:-
- Today the teacher will discuss a new topic.
- My friends are going to a party tonight.
- The cow is drinking water.
- Children are playing in the park.
- Mrs. Sharma has an appointment at the clinic.
- Yesterday I saw a tall giraffe in the zoo.
- The school has organized an annual function.
- The child is playing with a bunch of keys.
- The birds are feeding their babies.
- An old woman is sitting under a tree.
2. Adjective phrases
An adjective phrase is a group of words that acts as an adjective by describing nouns or pronouns.
Very cute, very smart, in the red shirt is described or acts as an adjective phrase in a sentence.
Examples:-
- Her pet cat is very cute.
- Vaibhav is a very smart boy.
- Mehak wore her favorite Redshirt.
- The baby fell down the stairs.
- The children are playing cricket in the park.
- Seema is writing a letter.
- Rahul performs well in exams.
- It is raining heavily last night.
- She might have dinner together tonight.
- The children are laughing loudly.
3. Adverb phrase
An adverb phrase is a group of words that act as an adverb by modifying the verb or action in a sentence. Adverb phrase always tells about how, when, where, or to what degree.
Very fast, slowly, Hard, as soon as are some words that describe or act as an adverb phrase.
Examples:-
- Aditya ran very fast.
- The children are shouting very loudly.
- It rains heavily last night.
- Mayank is moving so slowly.
- They are going to watch a movie and shopping on Sunday.
- My mother drives so carefully on the slippery roads.
- The ball hit him very hard.
- They ran to cross the road.
- The guest is coming in the evening.
- The student left as soon as the bell rings.
4. Prepositional phrase
A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition and a noun phrase and at present functions of an adverb or adjective in a sentence.
In the garden, under it, after, or before are some words that describe or act as a prepositional phrase in a sentence.
Examples:-
- Mahesh is sitting inside the car.
- They are on the way to your home.
- The books are kept on the table.
- The girls are planning to travel around The hills.
- The man is sitting near the tree.
- The thief jumped through the wall.
- The cat is hiding under the bed.
- She will call him after a meeting.
- They are walking through the tunnel.
- Maya worked towards the door.
5. Verb phrase
A verb phrase is a phrase in which they have are with the main verb to express the complete meaning of a sentence or occur alone in a sentence. They may express the time or the action done.
Have been waiting, is broken, and is doing are some words that are used or act as a verb phrase in a sentence.
Examples:-
- The children are reading the book.
- Susan is writing a letter to her friend.
- You all must attend the seminar tomorrow.
- They might sleep after watching TV.
- He spilled water on the floor.
- All Children are participating waiting in an annual function.
- He has broken his favorite flower pot.
- They have been waiting for a long time.
- She may complete the work in the evening.
- The Baby is crying loudly.
