Healing Process of a Tattoo

Have you got a tattoo on your skin? Is your tattoo paining? Then do not worry. In this article, we will guide you about the healing process of a tattoo, how you can reduce the pain and increase the healing time. After you get a tattoo, it will take time to heal, and then you can show your tattoo to everyone.

Stages of the healing process of a tattoo

After you get a tattoo, it usually takes about a month to heal. If you are tattoo is large, then it will take longer to recover. Tattoos bring a long and natural process to get cured.

The healing process of a tattoo is divided into the following stages:-

Redness and Weeping

Once you get the tattoo, the tattoo artist will put a bandage over it and guide you to remove it. In most cases, you can remove the application within a few hours and sometimes in weeks. After you release the bandage, you will find that some fluid is coming from the tattoo, and the area around the tattoo is becoming red.

You might experience “weeping,” in which the ink comes out of the tattoo. This would last for a week, but you can consult a doctor even after you feel pain or redness for a week.

  • Itching

As days pass, you will feel the urge to itch the skin in and around the tattoo. But it would be best if you resisted the urge to itch the skin. You can apply some lotion, cream, or an ice pack that would provide relief.

  • Peeling

Your tattoo will start drying out, and by now, the itchiness should go away. If there is still redness and itchiness, it might be of an infected tattoo.

By this time, the tattoo is less bright, and a layer of dry skin is formed that will automatically peel off, showing the actual tattoo.

Which tattoos take longer to heal?

The healing period of a tattoo depends on the location and size of the tattoo. For instance, the tattoo near your joint or ankles or any flexible place will take a longer time than the place of your body that does not move much. Also, tattoos that are large and colorful take a longer time.

The healing time is subjective that depends on the person’s diet and care of the tattoo.

Tips to enhance the healing process of the tattoo: –

It is vital to keep the tattoo clean to avoid infection. You can use soap to keep the area around the skin clean. Before that, clean your hand with an anti-bacterial soap. It is advised that you use distilled or boiled water to clean the tattoo. Then dry the tattoo gently with a towel, and apply some moisturizer or cream. Sunlight is fatal for your tattoo. It can lead to fading away of the tattoo, especially fresh tattoos. So, trying wearing full sleeve clothes to prevent sunlight from touching the tattoo. You can apply sunscreen only after the tattoo has healed completely.

Your tattoo will likely urge you to itch. Avoid the temptation to itch at the tattoo. Itching may change the look of the tattoo. You can apply moisturizer to help ease the itching.

Oxygen is vital in the healing process of a tattoo. Your tattoo needs to breathe. After you get a tattoo, it is bandaged with a surgical wrap or plastic. Once you remove this bandage, avoid wrapping the tattoo with anything. Covering the tattoo can lack oxygen and increased moisturization, leading to itchiness and slow healing.

Skin Care Tips before Tattoo

  • Two days before getting a tattoo, make sure you do not consume any alcohol or drug as they thin the blood and cause increased bleeding.
  • A week before getting a tattoo, make sure you stay hydrated and drink a minimum of 2 liters daily.
  • When getting a tattoo, make sure that your clothing is loose and breathable and your tattoo area is easily accessible.

Signs that your tattoo is not healing

  • Redness- It is expected that the area around your tattoo will be red for a week or two. But if the redness continues, it indicates that something is serious.
  • It was oozing liquid. If you notice that a yellowish fluid is coming from the tattoo even after a week, this indicates that there might be an infection.
  • Swollen skin– The actual tattoo may be slightly swollen at first, but this spraying should quickly stop. If it does not, this means you are infected with ink.

Conclusion

Every tattoo heals at a different speed that depends on each person and the location of the tattoo. The healing process follows a four-stage timeline that includes oozing, itching, peeling, and continued aftercare.

It’s essential to be consistent and strident about aftercare, so your tattoo does not get infected. If you see any signs that your tattoo isn’t properly healing, see your doctor as soon as possible.
