Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second Prime Minister of India. He was a great patriot. He was born in 1904 on 2nd October in Mughal Sarai. He belonged to a Kayasth family. His father was a teacher. He died when Shastriji was only one and a half years old. He was brought up and educated by his maternal grandfather. He went to school and then to Kashi Vidyapith for higher education.

He began to take part in politics at an early age. When he was a boy he joined Congress. He was a true follower of Gandhiji. He took an active part in India`s Struggle for freedom and went to jail eight times.

In 1952, he was made General Secretary of the Congress. Next year he was made Minister of Transport and Railways. In 1961, he became Minister of Home Affairs. After the death of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was elected the second Prime Minister of India. Under his leadership, our country gave a crushing defeat to Pakistan in 1965. He won the hearts of his countrymen by his firm resistance to aggression.

He was peace-loving by nature. He had done many efforts for peace in his leadership. Sh. Shastri gave the popular slogan of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”.

Sh. Shastri died on January 11, 1966, at Tashkent in the night soon after singing the historic pact. The nation mourned his death. May his soul rest in peace in heaven! India will never forget him for unselfish service.
