Articles for Class 4

Definition of articles: We have read that articles are: ‘a’, ‘an’ & ‘the’. The articles are usually used before things or people. Articles are also used before nouns.

Types of Articles

Articles are of two types:

  1. Indefinite articles
  2. Definite articles

1. Indefinite Articles

An indefinite articles refers to something typically a noun without specifying it or it lets us introduce a noun. These are aandan.

Example:

  1. I had an apple today.
  2. She visited a doctor yesterday.
  3. A boy was scolded by a teacher today.
  4. She gave her a bouquet of flowers to congratulate her.
  5. The class took an hour to finish.

Use of ‘a’

“a” is used before the word that is starting with a consonant sound.

Examples:

a hat, a book, a kite, a boy, a woman, a man, a fruit, a jug, a pot, a bowl, a plate, a lion, a van, a pen, a girl, a peacock, a ball, a bat, a cat, a dog, a hook, a mango.

Use of ‘an’

“an” is used before the words starting with vowels (a, e, i, o, and u).

Examples:

an apple, an elephant, an ice cube, an orphanage, an umbrella, an owl, an egg, an orange, an engineer, or an eagle.

Some Exceptions:

  1. We use a unicorn, a one rupee note, a university, a useful task, and a one eyed-woman because these are some words that start with the sound of constants, when learning about consonants we need to take care of sounds also.
  2. We use an MBA student, an hour, an honest police officer, an X-mas tree, an S.T., and an S.C. because these are some words that begin with the sound of vowels but their spellings begin with consonants.

2. Definite Articles 

“The” is known as a definite article. It is used to refer to a particular person, place, or thing.

Examples:

  1. Look at the map of France.
  2. Is this the place where you both met?
  3. Am I the only one left?
  4. We were passing by the forest.
  5. The Amazon basin represents an area twice the size of India.

Uses of “The”

1. The first use is when we talk about a particular person, place, or thing that we are referring to or it is already referred to.

Examples:

  1. The boy standing in the right corner.
  2. I was talking about the white dress at the counter.
  3. She crossed the road by herself.
  4. This is the pen teacher wanted.
  5. The river is flowing in the east.

2. It is used before a noun.

Examples:

  1. The ocean is looking beautiful.
  2. We are looking at the moon.
  3. So, this is the tree you worship.
  4. The sky is pink.
  5. The earth is a living planet.

3. It is also used before superlatives.

Examples:

  1. My father is the strongest man.
  2. It is one of the most beautiful dresses I have seen yet.
  3. We have the longest drives in our life.
  4. She has the smallest pouch.
  5. These the most precious moments with you.

4.  It is also used to represent a whole class referred to by a noun.

Examples:

  1. The sunflower is a beautiful flower.
  2. The dog is one of the most faithful animals.
  3. The flock of sheep was passing by.
  4. The lion is the king of all animals.
  5. One should follow the newspaper regularly to clear the exam.

5. It is used to place numbers.

Examples:

  1. The first bench is empty.
  2. The second from last is my friend.
  3. The last person left at 2:00 pm.
  4. The middle row is taken.
  5. Do not make me repeat the same thing again and again.

6. “The” is used for mountain ranges, rivers, oceans, monuments, canals, groups of islands, and ships.

Examples:

  1. The Ganga is one of the purest rivers.
  2. The Andaman islands are best for holidays.
  3. Her salon is located on the outskirts of the city.
  4. The Taj Mahal is recently in the news.
  5. This river passes through the Dhupgarh hills.
